What exactly does it mean to be healthy? Merriam-Webster defines healthy as “not sick or injured,” but does that really encapsulate a healthy lifestyle? Not completely, but it is important. Living a healthier life is possible if you focus on the 3 most important areas surrounding health: physical health, mental health, and emotional health.

Physical

Make Appointments. Call up your general doctor and your dentist and get yourself an appointment. Something as simple as an appointment is a great start to living a healthier life.

Exercise. Review your previous exercise plan, and revise as needed. The Mayo Clinic recommends getting a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate (or 75 minutes of vigorous) aerobic exercise and performing strength building exercises at least twice per week.  If you’re struggling getting started or need some motivation, it’s good practice to set a weekly goal for your exercise plan. Change it up and reward yourself for completing it.

Nutrition. Food diaries aren’t only for dieters. Making note of what you are putting in your body will increase your awareness of the amount and types of foods you are putting in your body. Also, slow down when you are eating. Don’t sit in front of the television and don’t inhale what’s on your plate so quickly. Eat slowly and enjoy your meals. Don’t eat so fast that you feel sick after!

Mental

Check Your Mood. You don’t need a diary for this one! Make a mental note throughout the day of what sets you off, stresses you out and makes you happy. You will soon be able to adjust your mood when negative situations arise without even knowing you are doing it. Always seek medical attention if you are having thoughts of depression.

Set a Schedule. Keeping yourself on a schedule will help you avoid impulse decisions. Don’t be so strict with yourself that spontaneity isn’t allowed, but get yourself situated in a schedule that you are comfortable and happy with. This step includes sleep! Set a sleep schedule and stick to it. Uneven hours of sleep each day isn’t healthy, but getting the recommended amount for your age is key in staying mentally healthy.

Emotional

Manage Your Stress. Stress is normal and healthy, but too much of it can cause burnout and anxiety. Learn how to manage your stress by doing yoga or meditating. There are lots of deep breathing techniques you can learn too.

Keep a Gratitude Journal. Joel Osteen once said, “Choosing to be positive and having a grateful attitude is going to determine how you’re going to live your life.” A gratitude journal will not only help you have a positive outlook on life but it is great to have and look back through at the end of the year.

Relationships. Life cannot be all about work! You need to have fun to live a healthy life. Make time with your friends and family, and meet up with them face-to-face if possible.
