So, you’ve just started a workout with a friend and are worried because you are sweating notably more than him/her. No need to worry. There are many reasons why some people sweat more than others.

First you have to remember that sweating is the body’s way of cooling off our systems. When our core body temperature overheats, our body releases sweat to expel and release that heat. The droplets of perspiration additionally serve to cool off the skin. Pretty neat, huh? So why do some people have more active cooling systems than others? Here are a few facts about sweat you need to know:

1.) Those that are in shape sweat more efficiently than those that aren’t.

Wait a second! I thought sweat was a sign of weakness! Nope. The fact is, studies show that those that are in shape tend to sweat earlier in their workouts so that they can maintain a higher level of intensity for a longer period of time.

2.) Women have more sweat glands than men, but perspire less than men from each gland.

You might already know this just by passing the men’s locker room, but men are much more “sweaty” than women. A lot of this is due to #3 below.

3.) More body mass means more sweat.

Those that carry more weight are prone to more sweat because their body fat serves as increased insulation. Men tend to be heavier than women and produce more heat, resulting in more sweat.

4.) Coffee, alcohol, caffeine, and spices raise your body temperature, increasing your need to sweat.

Be careful what you eat or drink before exercise! Studies shows that hot/spicy food, caffeinated beverages, and alcohol can raise your core body temperature. Caffeine also creates more fatigue. Try to eat food high in carbs and drink plenty of water to make sure you are well fueled.
