Hiccups, we’ve all had them, but do we really know anything about them? Here we are going to answer the three basic questions: what are hiccups, what causes them to occur, and how can you get rid of them?

What are Hiccups?

Well according to Merriam-Webster hiccups are, “a spasmodic inhalation with closure of the glottis accompanied by a peculiar sound.” Do you understand better now? Don’t worry we’ll explain. In your chest you have various muscles, one of which is called your diaphragm. This muscle helps you breathe, sing, and talk. Unfortunately, it can also make you hiccup. Have you ever had a random twitch in a muscle? That is what is happening with your diaphragm when you hiccup.

What Causes Hiccups to Occur?

Sometimes hiccups occur for no reason at all. However, there are some other causes that might be influencing your hiccups to appear. They are:

  • Overeating
  • Acid Reflux
  • Taking certain medications
  • Emotional stress or excitement
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Sudden temperature changes
  • Drinking carbonated beverages

Of these the most common causes are overeating and acid reflux.

How to Eliminate your Hiccups?

If you don’t feel like waiting them out, try these remedies. What has been proven to work the best is what is called a CPAP treatment, continuous positive airway pressure. This is only used in the most severe cases, but a modification can be used on those simple hiccups that are just a little too persistent. All you have to do is hold your breath. This will increase the air pressure in your throat which may help to stop your hiccups.

There are various other home remedies that other people and studies say work great. If your hiccups are not going away, try some of these.

  • Interrupt the hiccup reflex by being tickled or scared
  • Yoga or Pilates
  • Eat a spoonful of sugar
  • Eat a lemon wedge
  • Blow up a balloon
  • Breathe into a paper bag

If all of these fail, don’t worry, your hiccups will mostly likely go away in a short bit.

However, that being said, if your hiccups last longer than 48 hours, you should see a physician. They can help you know if there is a more serious condition causing you to hiccup.
