Let’s be honest: cold sores are annoying and ugly. Those of us who have to deal with them know that cold sores come about during the most inconvenient times, and worst of all; they hurt!

There are creams, oils and ointments for treating cold sores, but wouldn’t it be better if they never came around at all?

Don’t Stress

When you’re stressed, does it help to have a blister on your face? Stress activates the virus that causes cold sores, turning already stressful situations into personal disasters.

If you experience stress on a regular basis, find a calming routine that you follow every day. Some people exercise, others set aside time to read or meditate.

Whatever works for you, make it a priority and you’ll be able to take on the stress without it showing on your face.

No Touching

When you have a painful blister throbbing on your lip, you might feel the need to rub or even pop it. Resist the urge! Touching cold sores contaminates your hands, and can spread the infection to other parts of your face and body.

Throw Out Your Toothbrush

What’s worse than treating a cold sore? Treating it and then seeing two more pop up a week later.

Some people are baffled when their infections never go away, but they don’t realize that they are doing to themselves.

Once your cold sore is receding, start using a new toothbrush that isn’t infected with the virus. This also applies to lip balms, makeup and anything else that might have touched your lips during a cold sore breakout.

Apply Medicated Ointment

Preventing cold sores is much better than treating them with creams and home remedies, but we know those are usually necessary to combat the infection.

Some treatments don’t work for everybody, and if you find that nothing seems to be working for you, come see us at Mountain Peaks Family Practice.
