Summer is a great time to get active, to enjoy the great outdoors, and to bond with family through play or vacations. As you gear up for this summer, make sure to check out these tips to stay healthy and safe throughout the summer.

Exercise Outside

Now that the weather’s back to warm, avoid the enclosed gym and get going in the great outdoors. In the summer, there’s a lot to do: nature walks, hikes, cycling, swimming, and games with your kids. If exercising outside is tough for you, be sure to take non-drowsy allergy medications or talk to your doctor so you can enjoy the warmth.

Stay Hydrated

When the weather gets very hot and dry, make sure you drink plenty of water whenever you are thirsty. This goes especially for those exercising or exploring outdoors. Keeping hydrated is one way you can defend against heat stroke.

Keep a Consistent Sleep Schedule

It’s tempting to stay up later with the longer days. Despite the promise of late, late sunsets, keep your sleep schedule consistent and go to bed at the same time. Go to bed and wake up at the same times as the rest of the year, and avoid alcohol within three hours of going to bed.

Be Careful of Your Eyes

When you’re outside, especially for a long time, be sure to wear sunglasses or other protective eyewear. You’ll want to block at least 99% of ultraviolet rays to avoid cataracts later in life. Keeping sunglasses on can also keep the skin around your eyes from wrinkling as you squint.

Wear Plenty of Sunscreen

Naturally, when you spent lots of time outdoors, you’ll want sunscreen with an SPF and water resistance to match your chosen activities. Make sure to reapply it every couple of hours to keep up this protective barrier!

Consider Anti-Chlorine Shampoo

Chlorine is damaging to skin and hair if you leave it on long enough. Plus, it can alter your hair color! If you are planning on swimming all summer, consider an anti-chlorine shampoo to remove this harmful chemical from your hair. And don’t forget a good cleansing body wash to get it off your skin!
