Another year, another goal! New Year’s has come and gone, which means by now you’ve probably decided on your latest resolution, and this year we are determined to help you accomplish it.
According to a survey done by Nielson, the most common New Year’s resolution is to “stay fit and healthy.” In fact, in 2015, 37 percent of all those interviewed chose this as their overarching goal for the year.
However, according to The University of Scranton, only about 8 percent of people will achieve their New Year’s resolutions.
This year is going to be different because this year we are giving you our 5 tips on how to keep your healthy New Year’s resolutions. Whether it’s eating healthier, losing weight or just staying fit, each of these guidelines will help you to be part of that 8 percent at the end of the year.
1. Write it Down
People are 42 percent more likely to achieve their goals when they write it down. Writing down goals helps you clarify what you want to do. Setting specific and realistic expectations will help you to focus your energy on what you really want to accomplish. For example, “lose 1 pound a week” is much better than “lose weight” because it is something you can measure and work towards every week.
2. Use Outside Help
Make sure you get other people involved. Sharing your goal with others increases your odds for success, according to the Business Improvement Architects. Others will encourage you when you are struggling and hold you accountable to your goals. While it might seem uncomfortable to share your personal goals with others, it will be worth it if it helps you achieve them.
3. Track Your Progress
Most New Year’s resolutions fail because people make their goals too general. How do you measure being a better person or being happier? Make your goals specific enough so you can track your progress throughout the year. Instead of “be happier,” say five positive things every day. Then at the end of the day or the week you can track how well you did. Tracking your progress will help you stay on track and give you a reason to celebrate your small successes.
4. Get Creative
Resolutions start out exciting. However, within a couple of weeks the thrill of making big changes in your life can quickly become draining. Spice up your resolution with new and fun solutions. Want to lose weight? Check out these 10 creative ways to exercise. Want to eat healthier? Make a crazy fun dish like fruit pizza. Changing things up will help keep you motivated instead of burning out after the first couple of weeks or months.
5. Don’t Give Up
Above all be patient with yourself. There will be days or weeks where you do not meet your goals, and that’s okay. During those times, just keep trying and keep going.
