Last month we discussed the effects of stress on the body. Now consider these five tips to help you de-stress in your everyday life.

Take Care of Yourself

When demands on your time begin to overwhelm you, it’s tempting to cut back on sleep or food. In reality, your body needs to stay healthy to handle everyday stress. Instead of de-sleeping or de-fooding, de-stress by providing yourself with healthy meals that stimulate productivity, such as bananas, potatoes, or greens. Allowing yourself a small portion of your favorite treat can also cut back on feelings of anxiety.

Socialize

People who provide you with a sense of self-worth can help you relax by removing feelings of inadequacy that lead to stress. Laughter really is the best medicine, so be certain to hang around people who make you smile. Taking the time to express or talk through what’s stressing you can also lead to a sense of relief, and possible solutions to your stress. And a sincere kiss with that special someone definitely won’t hurt anything.

Excersize

Excersize doesn’t have to mean a hard workout for several hours. In fact, pushing yourself too hard can add to your stress. Instead, try taking a calming walk through a park, practicing yoga, or doing simple desk excersizes. The mere act of physical stimulation provides your mind with a much needed moment to rest and recover from situations that stress you.

Enjoy Nature

A long walk through nature isn’t the only way to enjoy the great outdoors. If you find yourself trapped indoors for long periods of time, you can de-stress with a few simple alternatives. Giving yourself cut flowers, or bringing a plant to your office desk can brighten your atmosphere and bring nature’s soothing effects indoors. Even the simple act of looking out a window can ground your mind and calm anxiety.

Be Kind

Showing gratitude to people in your life reminds you of  what really matters. As a bonus, showing gratitude will also de-stress those around you. While expressing appreciation to your family, friends, and co-workers, also remember to be kind to yourself. Remind yourself that you are doing your best, and most importantly, believe it.
