Many times, people are too embarrassed to ask about contraception. But if you aren’t ready to raise a child, this is still very important information to have on hand. Particularly because, due to contraception rumors, misconceptions abound. These myths surrounding contraception can get you pregnant before you’re ready. Here’s what you should know to prepare.

#1: Condoms break too easily, so I shouldn’t use them

While condoms can break, it’s unlikely with gentle handling. Many people claim a condom broke in order to receive ECPs, but this actually may be to hide the fact that they didn’t use one. The risks of a condom breaking, however, are much lower than the chance of getting pregnant, which is 1 in 20.

#2: Emergency contraception pills cause abortion

ECPs often get confused with abortion pills, but they are not similar at all. ECPs simply prevent pregnancy by delaying ovulation, thereby preventing conception before it starts. They work because sperm wait in the fallopian tubes for an egg if one hasn’t already descended. This is why it’s so important to take an ECP within 5 days to prevent pregnancy. But if you have ovulated already, be aware that ECPs are not effective in preventing pregnancy any longer.

#3: You’re safe the first time you have sex

Many a girl has gotten pregnant due to this myth. The chance of pregnancy is 1 in 20, and does not vary depending on whether this is your first time. There’s a chance you could get away with not using contraceptives. However, it’s better to always use protection whenever you know you’re going to have sex.

#4: Certain positions prevent pregnancy

Many men and women hear that standing up can prevent pregnancy, or–conversely–that lying down with legs elevated can help you get pregnant. However, position does not affect the likelihood of getting pregnant.

#5: Pulling out works

Out of a desire to avoid other methods of contraception, some male partners may promise withdrawal, or coitus interruptus. However, this is not a good way to prevent pregnancy. Some guys may not keep that promise until it’s too late. Plus, it’s possible to leak sperm before actually coming.

#6: Keep track of your cycle to avoid pregancy

This can work, but only if you seek advice from a health professional. It’s one of the original and most natural methods of preventing pregnancy. However, your cycle can change without you knowing. It’s also possible to get pregnant any time of your cycle. So, if you want to use this method, be sure to talk with your doctor first. Otherwise, don’t trust this myth and stick with other methods of contraception.

#7: The Pill is dangerous for younger women

Actually, the Pill can have unsafe side effects for older, not younger, women. The only times a younger woman has higher risks is if she is a smoker, has a history of blood clots, or has a family history of heart attacks or strokes at early ages.

As you determine what type of birth control works best for you, make sure that you know the myths and misconceptions behind them. It’s better to educate yourself before than after so you can stay safe from the start!
