Chronic stress and acute (everyday) stress are two very different things.
Stress, in general, is a feeling of being overwhelmed and worried. Defined by Medicine Net, stress is “a physical, mental, or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension.” It can affect all ages and genders. While some everyday stress can be a good thing, even a healthy emotion, too much of it can be bad.
Acute (Everyday) Stress
This type of stress is normal. It can happen to us any day or every day. It’s the kind of stress you feel before giving a big presentation or going on a first date. That heart-pounding-out-of-your-chest kind of stress. The hormones released in acute stress sharpen your attention and release adrenaline. These chemicals help you deal with the situation and it is completely normal – even healthy.
Chronic Stress
Chronic stress occurs when there is over- or repeated exposure to stressful situations or traumatic experiences. It occurs when those everyday acute stressors are poorly managed. When untreated, chronic stress can have serious mental, emotional and physical health conditions, such as:
- Emotional wellbeing
- Anxiety
- Insomnia
- Headaches
- Muscle pain
- High blood pressure
- Weakened immune system
- Depression
Stress Management
Stress management includes determining what the stressor(s) are and changing your lifestyle and behavior towards the stressor(s). The following tips are helpful in managing stress:
- Cultivating good sleep habits
- Engaging in daily exercise
- Eating a healthy and balanced diet
- Engaging in social activities and gatherings
